Cryptid Culture Magazine

Attention Cryptozoology Fans!

Cryptid Culture Magazine is a new print publication based out of Long Island, NY. Brian Richardson, founder and designer for “Mythic Articulations,” came up with the inspiration for the magazine while discovering all of the ‘cryptid art’ and artists for “Mythic Articulations.”

Armed with the concept Richardson began pulling together material for the new magazine in early 2015.  “We began to believe there might be an audience for such a magazine if it could include not only visual art but fiction, essays, poetry etc. as well as content covering the influence of cryptids on books, film, TV, gaming, fashion, social media and science; really anything that might fall under the purview of ‘cryptid culture’ including interviews with cryptozoologists” says Richardson.

The editors began to tap Pangea Fellows for contribution of articles and photography shortly thereafter.  So far, Pangea cryptozoologists, Ken Gerhard, Linda Godfrey, Scott Marlowe, and many of our colleagues have provided stories to “Cryptid Culture.”

Mothman Festival Report

This year marked the 15th Anniversary of the Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  Pangea Fellows, Ken Gerhard, Scott Marlowe, and Robert (Reese) Marlowe were there to celebrate.

The event, held in Mid-September celebtates the mysterious, winged creature — first spotted 50 years ago – that has become a cryptozoological legend and the central focus of the Hollywood Movie ‘The Mothman  Prophecies” starring Richard Gere. (The movie was based on Jeff Keel’s 1975 book.)

According to Robert Marlowe, who had time to visit the Mothman Museum this year, “Many of the propsused in the movie are on display in the museum.”

Thanks largely to the movie, and the collapse of the Silver Bridge (which the Mothman ostensibly forewarned)  the simple mention of “Point Pleasant, W.Va.” even thousands of miles from the sleepy town on the Ohio River will prompt people to ask “You mean, where that Mothman comes from?”

For those few that don’t know about the Mothman, the creature was first reported spotted near Point Pleasant, at a former ammunition depot locally called “the TNT area,” in Kanawha County between November 1966 and December 1967.

The Mothman, described as a “large, flying humanoid with ten-foot wings and glowing red eyes.” There’s a statue representing the creature stands in a park in central Point Pleasant today.

This year’s event featured cast members from Destination America’s TV show “Mountain Monsters,” the Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings (AIMS), including John “Trapper” Tice, Jeff Headlee and Willy McQuillian (who investigate mysterious sightings of creatures and phenomena in the Appalachian Region), and presentations by Nick Redfern and Pangea’s Ken Gerhard, star of TV’s “Missing in Alaska” series on cable.

Pangea’s, Scott Marlowe, manned the organization’s vendor table on 4th Street – right next to the Mothman Statue. “There must have been at least 10,00 people there this year,” commented Marlowe. “We were swamped and sold out of every book we had brought along for the author’s signing table.”

The event draws fans of the paranormal; cryptozoology, new age, ghost hunters, and UFO buffs, from all over the world – even a far away as New Zealand and Australia.

Both Gerhard and Marlowe signed books that they have authored for their many readers and were “thrilled to see all their Fans and Supporters.”

Pilgrimage to Monroeville

Pangea’s Scott Marlowe and Robert Reese recently made a pilgrimage to Monroeville, Alabama to pay their respects to Harper Lee at her gravesite.

Harper Lee

“Nellie” Harper Lee

Nellie Harper Lee is best known for writing the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller “To Kill a Mockingbird” (published in 1960) and the recently released “Go Set a Watchman” (published in 2015), which portrays the Finch family years after the events for which they were immortalized in Mockingbird.  However, Watchman was actually written by Ms. Lee before Mockingbird and locked away for decades before being published.

“To Kill a Mockingbird,” is about racial injustice in a small Alabama town during the Great Depression.  The book sold more than 40 million copies and became one of the most taught works of fiction ever written by an American author.

Ms. Lee died in her sleep at the Meadows, an assisted living facility, on Friday, February 19, 2016, in Monroeville, Alabama where she lived. She was 89 years old.

Marlowe and Reese wanted to stop by Monroeville to pay their respects while on a book signing tour of the Southern States this spring that included locations in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Davies and Gerhard to Speak at International Bigfoot Conference

Adam Davies

Adam Davies

At the beginning of September, l will be speaking at the International Bigfoot Conference in Kennewick, Washington. A very strong line up of speakers includes Dr Bindernagel, Dr. Meldrum, Loren Coleman and another Pangea Institute Fellow,  Ken Gerhard, to name but a few will be making presentations.

My talk is about the quest for Science when doing field research, and the importance of dealing in hypothesis rather than certainties.

I will start with a general introduction to my field work, before focusing in on Bigfoot and ending with a recent investigation into the controversial Soha site in Oregon.

You can be sure that during the conference at least four of the speakers will be presenting ground breaking new evidence. If you are able, the conference will be well worth attending.
